When a print operator sets up NFC business cards, the instinct is to treat the NFC chip as the whole product. The chip is embedded, the redirect URL is set, the card is activated. Done. But most experienced operators also print a QR code on the card — and there's a good reason for that. This article explains why, and covers the specific tool we recommend for QR code generation alongside an NFC operation.

Why NFC alone leaves a gap

NFC chips are reliable and the tap-to-open experience is fast. But in practice, not every recipient of a business card will use it the same way. Older Android phones — especially budget models still common in markets outside Western Europe and North America — may not have NFC enabled by default, or may handle NFC differently depending on the browser and OS version. Some people have had a poor experience tapping NFC cards from other brands and simply don't try. A small number of iOS users, particularly on older devices, need to actively open the Camera app to scan rather than tap.

The gap isn't large. In practice, NFC works for the majority of card recipients without any friction. But a business card that can fail silently for a meaningful share of recipients — due to poor print quality, distance, or lighting conditions — is a card that doesn't fully do its job. The QR code is the fallback — and it doubles as the primary interaction for anyone who's more comfortable with a camera scan than an NFC tap.

Static QR codes create the same problem as static business cards

The whole value proposition of NFC business cards is that the physical card is permanent but the profile behind it isn't. A cardholder changes their job title, updates their website, or redirects to a seasonal portfolio — they change it in their dashboard and the tap-through reflects it immediately. No reprint, no version drift.

A static QR code — the kind you generate in seconds from a free online tool — destroys that value. The QR image encodes the destination URL directly. If the destination URL ever changes, the QR code becomes wrong. You'd have to reprint the card. You've just recreated the core problem of the paper business card, on a card that costs three times as much.

A dynamic QR code solves this cleanly. The QR image encodes a redirect URL — a short, stable URL that the QR platform controls. The final destination behind it is editable at any time from a dashboard. The printed QR stays valid permanently. The logic is exactly the same as the NFC chip's redirect mechanism. Same principle, different physical mechanism.

What to look for in a QR tool for NFC card operators

Not all QR platforms are appropriate for a professional print operation. These are the criteria that actually matter:

  • Dynamic QR codes — the redirect URL must be editable after printing without changing the QR image.
  • Branded QR design — the ability to add a logo and match the QR's colors to the card design. A generic black-and-white QR on a premium UV-printed metal card looks wrong.
  • Scan analytics — real data on when and where each code was scanned. This is a selling point for your clients, and proof the card is working.
  • Reliable redirect speed — a QR code redirect that takes two seconds to load is a bad experience. The platform's infrastructure matters.
  • No scan limits — some QR platforms cap the number of scans on lower tiers. For a card in active circulation, arbitrary caps are unacceptable.
  • Simple per-code management — you need to be able to set up and hand off individual codes without giving clients access to your entire account.

How to set it up alongside NfcPress

Both point to the same cardholder profile URL — or to a separate URL if the client prefers different landing pages for tap vs scan. Here's the practical workflow:

    Download the branded QR image at print resolution. Add the client's logo and match the color to their card design.
